15 Foods To Give Your Baby This Summer
Summer fruits and vegetables really are the best
Summer has it all - sunshine, trips to the beach, frozen treats, and wonderful produce. I may be biased, but summer really is the best season for eating! My all-time top favorite foods are summer foods - berries, peaches, tomatoes, zucchini, corn, the list goes on!
And if your baby was born in the fall or winter, there’s a good chance that summer foods might be the first ones they get to eat. Lucky them!
When you buy produce that’s in season, you’re getting foods that are fresh, nutritious, and full of flavor. Fruits and veggies picked in season are more likely to be picked local to where you live, so they will be fresh and stay fresh longer once you bring them home. They’ll also taste better because they’ve been picked more recently and ripened more on the plant before they were harvested.
Compare the taste of strawberries bought in January to ones bought in June. If you’ve even bought fresh strawberries in January, they probably have some yellow or white left on the top part right below the leaves, taste somewhere between cardboard and an unripe tomato, and are stupid expensive.
Strawberries bought in June, however, are completely red from top to tip, taste juicy and sweet, and are more affordable. And that’s because June is the season for strawberries!
All foods have a season. Visit the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) guide for seasonal fruits and veggies for a full list!
How to get started making baby food
Starting your baby on solid foods can be scary. For around the first 6 months of their life, they are on a pure liquid diet of just breast milk and/or formula. There’s no need to decide “what’s baby going to eat for dinner tonight?”, which is nice. It’s hard enough feeding yourself in those first few months of constant sleep deprivation.
But then, around 6 months, when your baby is hopefully letting you get some sleep at night, that’s when a little more planning comes in. I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be hard! With a few exceptions, your baby can eat pretty much the same thing as the rest of the family, you just have to make sure its the right size and texture to keep them safe. Read on to learn how to start your baby on solid foods.
And don’t let all those packaged baby foods stress you out. You don’t need to buy baby food (although if you want to, that’s totally fine, no judgments here!). Making your own baby food is easy, affordable, and quick. You don’t need any special equipment. You can make all the puréed food your baby will ever eat in just a few hours. Most babies transition from purées to more solid textures within a few months, so it doesn’t take a lot of effort to make enough. Plus, homemade baby food tastes fresh and doesn’t contain preservatives. For more information on making your own baby food, read my Tips on Making Your Own Baby Food.
